Pritchard Francis were commissioned by the City of Darwin to undertake design and documentation consultancy services for the roadworks, gatehouse, offices and weighbridge facilities to create a new coordinated entrance to the Shoal Bay Waste Management Facility servicing the Darwin area.
Works consisted of provision of a new combined gatehouse and office building, two new weighbridges to accommodate both inbound and outbound traffic, permanent shade structures over the new building, entrance lanes and vehicle parking areas, plus extensive roadworks design and stormwater management works.
Particular attention to the roadworks design was required to accommodate the following:
- High volumes of both residential and commercial traffic inclusive of provisions for use by B-Double trucks.
- Careful design to ensure separation of residential and commercial lanes at the entrance with emphasis on providing a safe operating environment.
- Adaptable road design to enable selected reversal of traffic flows through the gatehouse area to accommodate varying extremes of traffic during cyclone clean-up operations.
- Careful consideration of driver sightlines and roadworks design to incorporate an existing roundabout and existing waste recycling facility entrance, whilst enabling entry and exit through the weighbridges for B-Double trucks.
