The $28.5M expansion at the existing Banksia Hill Detention Centre comprised of three new accommodation buildings for male detainees and two for female detainees, along with additional offices, a case planning unit, visiting space and a new female education building.
Pritchard Francis carried out the design of the alterations to the existing structures. These included a new retail outlet and upgrade to some of the existing accommodation units and an increase the size of the bulk store facilities.
As the existing facility was to maintain full operation during construction it was imperative that construction could be trucked into the facility, materials and processes were controlled during construction to ensure that detainees couldn’t interact with the works.
The design incorporated many security requirements, as Pritchard Francis have completed these types of facilities in the past they were able to provide valuable information to the design team to ensure that durability and security could be maintained to the highest level at all times.
